Keys to Maximize Your Qi during the Fall season
As I take a whiff of the crisp autumn air and burnt smell in the breeze I am overtaken by a magical feeling of melancholy. Watching christmas lights being set up on Shattuck Avenue and city streets across the country I am filled with both contentment and a deep sadness that comes with being a human.
This calm sense of contentment and ease comes as I watch the leaves on the trees dying and changing color from green to bright golds and rich burgundy. It reminds me that our emotions go through a similar season of change. I have dealt with depression most my life and through meditation and qigong I have learned how to embrace this process of internal change and gain insight, energy and clarity through it.
Feelings of melancholy, sadness, grief, and depression are natural around this time of year and it’s important to both honor these feelings and not let them control you.
So what can you do to ride this wave and maximize your energy?
In Qigong and chinese medicine autumn is the time of year that corresponds to sunset during the day, and as dusk turns to night you may feel the urge to go inward from the bright light of the day and snuggle up on the couch with a good book and some warm soup. That’s one of my favorite Autumn past times to rejuvenate!
There is a reason we feel like we want to go inside, because nature itself is turning inward, contracting and dying. As soon as we accept this a new sense of energy and power are available to us.
Keys to empowering your Qi through Autumn:
Don’t take your mind or emotions too seriously, hold them with ease and acceptance.
Fall is also a time of grieving and letting go, so give yourself time to reflect, cry and heal.
Refrain from trying to resist or change this internal state as it is simply be a tide you’re are moving through.
Take small steps in your projects and activities, by doing less the right way you will save energy and increase efficiency during this time. Be calm and disciplined in your activity, now is not a time for striving or reaching, instead come back to center and re-evaluate what’s working and what’s not.
Release the over critical mind and accept yourself just as you are.
Go to sleep early and wake up early to maximize the dwindling daylight hours.
Let your mind be peaceful and your willpower soften. You cannot force a project to completion just as you can’t force a flower to bloom out of season.
Tune into the virtues of courage, integrity and honor. Observe your life without judgment and be honest with where you are. We can only change that which we are aware of and it takes courage to truly look at our patterns and see how we’ve created the life we’re living.
Breath into the deeper under current of life and the seasons, realize that our country and world are going through massive change, death and eventual evolution. On a personal level you are going through a similar process, and the magic of the melancholy lies in simply feeling the depths of your emotions without turning away, telling a story about it, judging, or distracting yourself. Rest and know that you are perfect as you are.
May you embrace all life has to offer and enliven your soul in the process.
Love and Blessings,
